How I Made Restringing a Danelectro 59 NOS+ Easier

Danelectro String and Plectrum

I’ll probably forget, too.

  1. Masking tape. Put this on either side of the bridge.
  2. Wire clippers. Loosen the string enough to come off the peg. Clip off the really bendy end that used to be around the tuning peg. The rest pulls through with less fuss.
  3. A very slight bend at the pointy end of each new string will help it thread up the back
  4. Use a guitar pick for a ramp. See photo. The string hits the guitar pick then follows the smooth surface into your hand. This protects the paint job and eases the string right up the back of the bridge. Once enough string is on the pick, pinch it to the pick and pull.

I use masking tape on any guitar that doesn’t load the strings through the body. If something is going to scratch against the front of the guitar while restringing then I am going to protect the guitar with masking tape.

Quick note: I wrote this after successfully restringing the guitar. It is possible to slide a layer of tape under the strings to protect the other side of the bridge.

Man, I love this guitar.

I Need Album Art Yesterday!

Emergency Album Art Without Breaking Copyright

So, I’ve been there.  Plainly some other people have been there too.  You work hard on some music. It sounds good. We’re ready to share it with the world.

We upload the file to our favorite service.  Soundcloud.  Bandcamp.  Anywhere else.  And it asks for art.

Good news. We’re not screwed. Creating Album Art Quickly

Happiness is Clean Code

Most of this is standard practice for most everyone.

My employer has been in business online for over 20 years.   They are a small business, and not everyone has time or resources to stay on the cutting edge of everything.  This is natural and they really do work hard with what they have.

I have long been the company advocate for clean, future-proof, and W3C complaint code.  There are times when they ask me to reign it in, and I do.  Again, I respect that every project has different needs and everyone at the business has different strengths.

There are times when they set me loose on a project, and I gleefully take care of business.   This is a lot of happiness about one of those times. How I solved half of the problem before anyone imagined the problem.

Not Blogging Much

It’s been ten months, I think?

I love the Internet and all.  But I also love living in the real world.  I’ve had a really big year with a lot of huge, necessary, hopefully positive changes.

One of those changes is that I just want to be in the world.  I want to look the other person in the eye when we speak, when we agree or disagree, when we share camaraderie.   Whatever it is.

I’ve spent the last four years effectively pulling my best self out of all my fears and insecurities.  So while I love working on web sites and code, I’d prefer to communicate face-to-face or from a stage.

It’s a balance and it’s helped me to be happier than I’ve been in years.

I bought some tarot cards

And I plan to use it.

Friends who have seen me grow over the last ten years might have some interesting reactions to this.

I write best with a little bit of chaos in the mix. Random ingredients that have no immediate connection to the story. In fact, I love working that way.

Creation is magic to me. Better than magic, creation is an absolute and knowable force.

I Have Not Forgotten the Malone Movies

I am wrapping up the first draft of House on Haunted Hill, and preparing for FearDotCom.

House on Haunted Hill is something I want to cover the right way – the movie deserves a lot of respect.
