{"id":491,"date":"2017-03-01T13:32:09","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T19:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arcanasphere.com\/blog\/?p=491"},"modified":"2017-03-01T13:32:09","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T19:32:09","slug":"inspired-by-the-music-that-was-inspired-by-shoegaze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arcanasphere.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/inspired-by-the-music-that-was-inspired-by-shoegaze\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspired by the Music that was Inspired By Shoegaze"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is all navel-gazing.<\/p>\n<p>It all ultimately comes down to asking, &#8220;<em>how do I label my music?<\/em>&#8221; \u00a0<!--more Read more: influences, new favorite bands, and contemplating this question --><\/p>\n<p>I began to notice that a lot of the music that moved me as a person and a home recording enthusiast was inspired by shoegaze music. \u00a0 If asked for the biggest musical influences on my own sound then I would list these four songs. \u00a0The titles link to YouTube videos.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The Dollyrots<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tqnky80jJts\">Satellite<\/a>. \u00a0This is a song that lyrically is about wishing for happier times. \u00a0As someone writing my own lyrics, I can&#8217;t stress enough how\u00a0much this led to challenging questions about life and art in general. \u00a0I hate being\u00a0<em>that guy<\/em>, but I&#8217;m trying to get through a thing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Gandharvas<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s25M_EuwN8o\">Milk Ocean<\/a>. \u00a0Quiet &amp; Loud. <em>Vulnerable in a storm<\/em>. \u00a0Sensual through emotions, not through the act itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Dandy Warhols<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qh9AkysPLq8\">Genius<\/a>. \u00a0This is a\u00a0song with a strong, simple melody carried throughout. \u00a0Learning to play this song, then learning to throw away the Internet tabs and play it on open strings, had \u00a0a tremendous impact on the musical side of my songwriting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spiritualized<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sYzCreXMKzI\">Stay with Me<\/a>. \u00a0In theater, I think of some scenes as what my mentor calls &#8220;The rule of three.s&#8221; \u00a0You do something once, three times, or a thousand times. \u00a0If more than once, then you heighten the action every time. \u00a0This song perfectly captures that spirit, on top of its ethereal qualities and emotional openness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The third and fourth influences are important. \u00a0The Dandy Warhols were\u00a0plainly\u00a0taking on shoegaze music (Ride) as one of their many (many) inspirations. \u00a0Spiritualized was born out of Spaceman 3.<\/p>\n<p>So, I wound up in this space where I felt side-loaded into the shoegaze genre. \u00a0I can&#8217;t even pretend to be a part of it, but I won&#8217;t pretend it isn&#8217;t part of my current DNA. \u00a0Along the way I found or rediscovered other acts to appreciate.<\/p>\n<p>Wouldn&#8217;t You by <a href=\"https:\/\/flirtingfullstop.bandcamp.com\/releases\">Flirting<\/a> was easily my favorite song of 2016. \u00a0I heard a lot of great music, to be sure. \u00a0Flirting captured that <em>Vulnerable In A Storm<\/em> feeling\u00a0perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>The Lush album Gala had been a <em>get-to-it-later<\/em>\u00a0album for years. \u00a0 I finally got to it, and it finally connected. \u00a0To be fair, Papasan will always be my favorite Lush song. \u00a0 This might be heresy to many of their fans. Sorry.<\/p>\n<p>Over at Bandcamp, other finds that at least encourage me and keep a certain sound in mine include <a href=\"https:\/\/thesummerdolls.bandcamp.com\/\">The Summer Dolls<\/a> and Austin&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/weareblushing.bandcamp.com\/\">Blushing<\/a>. \u00a0<strong>Yes, this means two of my favorite new bands are <em>Flirting<\/em> and <em>Blushing<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0 That&#8217;s just a fun sentence.<\/p>\n<p>This navel-gazing helps. \u00a0Sometimes it just permits me to clarify my own thoughts. \u00a0There&#8217;s a huge shoegaze influence in a roundabout not so huge way. \u00a0Yes, I have began collecting guitar pedals as of late. \u00a0But, no, I can&#8217;t say what I&#8217;m doing is anything more than\u00a0<em>influenced<\/em> by the genre, proper.<\/p>\n<h2>Questions I&#8217;m Trying to Answer<\/h2>\n<p>How do I tag music when I post it online? \u00a0 What about tweeting out the link to my music?\u00a0Which hashtags are appropriate?<\/p>\n<p>Where do I find peers? \u00a0How do I find people\u00a0to talk music with? How do I find my audience?<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to crud up a space if what I&#8217;m doing belongs somewhere else. \u00a0I&#8217;d love to find where that space is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is all navel-gazing.
