So, Geocities is closing.

I started that site back around ’96 or 97.\u00a0 Back then, it was a megabyte or two there versus the 35 kilobytes at Angelfire.<\/p>\n

Right now there is no easy way to back up the site.\u00a0 One needs to download the files one at a time.\u00a0\u00a0 I wanted to do this to back up my old fan site for Detroit’s Trash Brats<\/a>.\u00a0 As it turned out, I downloaded every file on that account.\u00a0 Hundreds of files.\u00a0 One at a time.<\/p>\n

There were old pictures of myself, my brother, and old friends.\u00a0 Some I’m glad to see, some I’m still in touch with, and one or two that bring up mixed memories.\u00a0\u00a0 There were web pages of self-promotion, college-aged goth musings, some all-out old-fashioned trolling, and probably man-years of graphics work.\u00a0 Most of it limited to one project, or just plain ugly.<\/p>\n

The first picture my wife ever saw of me was there.<\/p>\n

A picture of my brother and I taken in the late summer of 1997 was there.\u00a0 It is one of my favorites.<\/p>\n

Yes, I am sporting crayon red hair in that picture.\u00a0 Some of it had formerly been purple, but I felt like trying something different for a couple of months.<\/p>\n

I miss those days somewhat — filling my little corner of the world up with color and ideas and possibility.<\/p>\n

The career and button-down shirts and family feels good too.\u00a0 I do love my children very, very much.<\/p>\n

The past few days have been a strange walk down memory lane – between scouring the old web site and suddenly remembering some very nice things that some people did for me during high school.\u00a0 I was able to quickly find one of them on Myspace, and am seriously considering a quick note to say hello, yes I remember, and it is still very appreciated.<\/p>\n

I have been trying to look forward for so long that the look back became a little disorienting. I kind of hope it stays that way, but I am very happy to see that the last 13 years have held more good memories than bad ones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
