Halfway Through My Facebook & Twitter Media Hiatus

I left most social media for the reasons listed in Moving My Social Media Presence.

It still bugs me. Children can be suspended from school for chewing their peanut butter sandwiches into the shape of a gun. Social media companies refused to suspend grown adults for genuinely abusive behavior.

So, I ‘m gone. This will be from approximately June through January.

Social Media Status

  • Facebook – deactivated. Account is over 10 years old.
  • Twitter – deactivated. Logging in every 3 weeks to keep my username. Account is well over 10 years old.
  • Reddit – Limited use. Generally aiming to help other hobbyists and to be a helpful voice.
  • Instagram – Account is still technically active, mostly because of how eagerly they destroy & lock deactivated accounts. The list of people I follow is curated very heavily and I rarely post there.
  • Others – Started my own Mastodon / Fediverse instance where the only user is me. Limited chat room exposure, although I love finding relaxed/social spaces.

Self Diagnosis

I am sheltering in place severely because it’s 2020, and we all know why. I leave once a week to get curbside grocery delivery and one plate of takeout food. It’s usually a 90 minute round trip.

I am much more likely to scan through Google News and read actual news stories from a variety of sources. When I’m not feeling deluged by social media hot takes, I’m willing and even curious to read more actual news.

I am more at peace with the world around me.

I am much more at peace with myself.

I have more time and energy for online courses, hobbies, people who matter to me, and things that matter to me.

I am profoundly lonely. This is the tradeoff. Despite this, I still feel much better lately.
